Ontario Liberals meet and exceed their child care commitments

Early investment means better opportunity for kids

Ontario Liberals have a proud story to tell about child care in our Province. Ours is the only level of government that continus to meet and even exceed its child care commitments.

Child care is more affordable than it was before the Liberals formed government in Ontario. On our watch, the Province has increased its investment in child care by 63 percent, and helped to create nearly 80,000 additional licensed child cre spaces across Ontario. Ontario Liberals, in government, have provided some 43,000 new fee subsidies annually. On our watch, the Province has expanded full fee subsidy eligibility to families earning under $20,000.

When the federal Conservative government abandoned child care, our government stepped in with an investment of $63.5 million to permanently fill the funding gap left by the federal government. Ontario's investments support about 8,500 child care subsidies, and help about 1,000 child care workers to keep their jobs.

Full-Day Kindergarten makes a difference for child care

Full-Day Kindergarten saves families money; helps stabilize child care centres; and frees up spots for parents in areas where child care spaces are scarce. Since 2003, Ontario has provided stabilization funding, which will grow to $51 million annually to help stabilize child care spaces.

Full-Day Kindergarten is being phased in over five years. This is year two. The phase-in allows municipalities, child care operators and communities to adjust to the changes. Currently, in Lisgar, Meadowvale and Streetsville, Full-Day Kindergarten is available at Plowman's Park School; St. John of the Cross School; and at Sherwood Mills School.

A full day of learning early in life can help improve your child's reading, writing and math skills and provide a strong foundation for future learning. It also makes the transition to Grade 1 easier for both you and your child. When the introduction to school is an enjoyable experience, your child is naturally inclined to learn and will be eager to be part of the school experience.
