Repairing damage to Mississauga from 13 lost years
Building a stronger Mississauga
Liberals:
Brought fairness back
Now Canada's sixth-largest city, Mississauga has big-city issues and needs.
Conservative and NDP governments in the 1990s didn't care. This Liberal government
did. Here are just some of the ways that a Liberal government has made Mississauga
a better place to live, work and raise a family. And as your MPP, I have fought in
favour of all of these measures:
- Changed the Region of Peel Act to give Mississauga equal representation
with Brampton and Caledon on Peel Council;
- Built the new Lisgar GO Train Station to serve the fast-growing
northwest neighbourhoods of Meadowvale, Lisgar and Churchill Meadows. It is the
first new GO Train station in Mississauga in 25 years;
- Funded capital expansions at both the Credit Valley Hospital, and the Trillium
Health Centre. Credit Valley's project got started ahead of schedule;
- Installed High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes along Highway 403 for cars
with two or more occupants;
- Provided some $65 million to Mississauga for the Bus Rapid Transit lanes
to help get people moving quicker on public transit;
- Invested $52 million in capital repairs and upgrades for the schools under the
Peel District School Board, and a further $14 million for Dufferin-Peel
Catholic Schools. Most projects are already complete;
- Built six new schools: public and Catholic, elementary and secondary;
- Phased out GTA Pooling, or the Toronto Tax that had been transferring
some $40 million per year of Mississauga taxpayers' funds to the City of
Toronto.
Tories:
Fought against us
The Ontario PC Party created most of the problems our Liberal government
has spent four years solving in Mississauga. They still don't get it. The Ontario
PC Party:
- While in government between 1995-2003, created GTA Pooling, that ultimately cost
Mississauga taxpayers some $40 million annually;
- Voted against Bill 186 that gave Mississauga stronger
representation on Peel Regional Council;
- Opposed every budget measure that saw Mississauga gain two cents of the gas
tax to invest in public transit;
- Opposed the Ontario Budget measures to improve public transit in Mississauga,
and while in government between 1995-2003, stopped investing in public transit;
- While in government between 1995-2003, declared a moratorium on building new
schools, and cut Ontario's education budget;
- In a desperate attempt to balance the 1999 budget, sold Highway 407,
leaving 905 commuters at the mercy of a foreign-owned consortium that can raise tolls
at will;
- Downloaded many provincial services and programs onto cities like Mississauga
to be financed by property taxes, instead of from the Ontario tax base.
NDP:
Not interested in us
The NDP is all over the map again, as usual.
- Voted against Bill 186, that restored some balance to the Peel Regional Council
by giving Mississauga half of the seats;
- Voted against smaller class sizes, against the Clean Water Act,
opposed new initiatives to expand public transit in Mississauga;
- Opposed the Phase II expansion of Credit Valley Hospital;
- Was completely incapable of governing between 1990-95, and has no coherent
set of policies today.
